Post-op Instructions for Fluoride Varnish Application
What is it?
Fluoride varnish is a resin-based fluoride containing a 5 percent sodium fluoride. The "varnish" is painted directly onto the tooth. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for dentinal sensitivity, as well as for prevention of dental cavities. Varnish will leave a thin clear coat on your teeth.
How does it benefit me?
When the proper application protocol is followed, the fluoride varnish remains on the teeth for a number of hours, releasing fluoride into the immediate environment (especially the interproximal and cervical areas where it is most needed) reapplication is recommended every four to six months.
How do I get the best results from my Fluoride Varnish application?
• If possible avoid eating rinsing or drinking for 30 minutes following the application of Varnish.
• Wait 2 hours before drinking any hot or alcoholic beverage.
• Wait 4 hours before brushing.
• Rest assured the next time you brush your teeth the residual Varnish will be removed while the effect will remain for the next 4-6 months.
• Remember, you must do your part in keeping your teeth healthy and comfortable by brushing and flossing twice a day and using an Oral Irrigator at least once a day when it is recommended to you.
